Fabric FAQ
Welcome to our Fabric FAQ! Below you'll find answers to the questions we hear most often from customers. If you need anything else, just email us at mintpluspink1@gmail.com — we love talking fabric.
How much fabric do I need for curtains?
Measure your window width and multiply by 1.5 to 2 for nice, full gathers, then add extra length for hems and the header. For example, a 60-inch-wide window usually needs about 3–4 yards of our 60-inch-wide fabric per panel. If you're unsure, email us your window measurements and we'll help you calculate it.
How much fabric do I need for cushion covers?
For a standard 18" x 18" cushion cover, 1/2 yard of 60"-wide fabric is plenty — you can cut two covers from it. Larger 20–22" floor cushions need about 3/4 to 1 yard. Add a little extra if your fabric has a large print that you'd like to center on the cushion front.
What is the width of your fabrics?
Most of our fabrics are 58–60 inches wide, which gives you generous coverage for curtains and upholstery projects. The exact width is listed on each product page, so please check before ordering. A wider fabric means you need fewer yards for the same project.
If I order multiple yards, will they arrive as one continuous piece?
Yes! Multiple yards of the same fabric are always cut as one continuous piece — never in separate cuts. If you order 3 yards, you'll receive a single 3-yard length. This makes it easy to cut long curtain panels without unwanted seams.
What does "sold by the yard" mean?
One yard equals 36 inches long by the fabric's full width (usually 58–60"). When you order 2 yards, you receive a piece 72 inches long and the full width wide. Simply choose your quantity in yards when adding fabric to your cart.
What is the difference between knit and woven fabric?
Knit fabrics are made from interlocking loops, so they stretch and bounce back — perfect for t-shirts, leggings, and anything fitted. Woven fabrics are made from threads woven over and under each other, so they're stable with very little stretch — ideal for curtains and upholstery. If you're not sure which one your project needs, check the product description or ask us.
How do I choose the right fabric for my project?
Start with how you want the finished piece to feel and move: soft and stretchy (knit), structured and crisp (woven cotton or linen), or plush and durable (velvet for upholstery). Each product page lists the fiber content and suggested uses to guide you. Still unsure? Email us a description of your project and we'll point you in the right direction.
How do I wash velvet fabric?
Most of our velvet upholstery fabrics should be spot-cleaned or dry-cleaned to protect the soft pile. Always check the care instructions on the product page first. If machine washing is allowed, use cold water on a gentle cycle and never wring velvet — press it between clean towels instead.
How do I wash linen fabric?
Linen gets softer with every wash. Machine wash in cold or lukewarm water on a gentle cycle with mild detergent, then line dry or tumble dry low. Remove it while slightly damp and smooth it flat to minimize wrinkles — linen's natural texture is part of its charm.
Will the fabric shrink? Should I pre-wash?
Natural fibers like cotton and linen can shrink a few percent on the first wash, so we recommend pre-washing before you cut and sew — especially for garments. Polyester and poly-blend fabrics barely shrink at all. When in doubt, pre-wash the fabric the same way you plan to wash the finished piece.
Are your fabrics suitable for upholstery?
Yes — browse our Furniture Fabric collection for durable velvets and linens chosen specifically for chairs, sofas, and cushions. Upholstery fabric needs to withstand daily use, so check each product description for suitability details. Our velvets are a longtime customer favorite for seating.
How long will my order take to arrive?
Orders are typically processed within 1–3 business days. US orders usually arrive in 2–5 business days via USPS Ground Advantage, and you'll receive tracking as soon as your order ships. During peak seasons, processing may take a little longer — thank you for your patience.
Do you offer free shipping?
Yes! US orders over $125 ship free — just use code FREESHIP25 at checkout. It's our way of saying thanks for stocking up on beautiful fabric. Shipping costs for orders under $125 are calculated at checkout based on weight and destination.
Do you ship internationally?
Yes, we ship worldwide! International shipping rates are calculated at checkout based on weight and destination. For orders shipping to Europe, please include a local phone number with your order to help avoid delivery delays.
What is your return policy?
You can start a return within 15 days of receiving your item, as long as the fabric is in new and unused condition with all original inserts. For change-of-mind returns (wrong color, changed your mind, ordered by mistake), return shipping is the customer's responsibility. If your fabric arrives damaged or incorrect, contact us right away with photos and we'll make it right.
The color looks different on my screen — what should I do?
We photograph every fabric in natural light for the most accurate color possible, but every screen displays color a little differently. If exact color matching is critical for your project, email us at mintpluspink1@gmail.com before ordering and we'll confirm the shade for you.
Can I get a discount on large orders?
Everyone gets 15% off their first order when joining our newsletter, and US orders over $125 ship free with code FREESHIP25. For very large or repeat orders, email us at mintpluspink1@gmail.com — we're happy to discuss options.
How do I care for knit fabrics to keep their stretch?
Machine wash knits in cold water on a gentle cycle, then tumble dry low or lay flat. Avoid high heat, which breaks down spandex and elastic fibers over time and causes sagging. Always check the product page for fiber-specific care instructions.
